Midwest Mission Distribution Center 2011

This summer the Mission Work Area is again planning to work at the Midwest Mission Distribution Center in Chatham, IL.  We are scheduled for the week of August 28-September 3. We have reservations for 12 people. You’ll be working side by side with members and friends from our church, and with other dedicated volunteers from churches in the Midwest. You will be doing God’s work, making a difference in the lives of those who are struggling with poverty, disease, and natural disasters. The health kits and flood buckets that we collect here at church are sent to this facility, and then distributed around the world to those in need. There are jobs for everyone at the center, from ages 11 to 99. They include examining and packing a variety of kits, assembling medical boxes, sewing school bags, sorting donations, building school desks in the fully equipped carpentry shop, painting, varnishing, and helping with outside landscape work.

We will be staying in a large, air-conditioned dormitory with a full kitchen and separate bathroom facilities for men and women.  Bedrooms have bunk beds for up to four people, perfect for a family. Carpooling will be available for anyone who doesn’t want to drive. If you can’t stay for a week, that’s okay.  Many of our volunteers have gone down on Sunday and returned home on Wednesday. The cost is $15.00 per night, plus a $50.00 materials fee. We usually purchase breakfast and lunch items to prepare at the dorm, and we eat out in the evening.

For those of you who have never been on a mission trip, this is a great way to get started. It’s not too far, the cost is not too great, and the time is not too long.  Putting our faith into action is at the heart of our Christian calling. When we reach out, using what God has given us in the service of others, we have life-changing experiences. Why not give it a try?
